Jim, as a veteran of the Israeli Defense Forces and participant in several interesting action I can re- assure you that Israel was always drawn in into conflict. In 1948, 1956 1967 1973 clearly was attacked at a time that Sharon was prepared for a preventive action but Kissinger forced Israel to hold it's fire and for that paying with over 2,500 deaths. The only miscalculation was in Lebanon were again politics stopped the military campaign in hope that Syria will switch sides similar to Egypt. Israel was assured by the loyalty and integrity of Lebanese Christians and big part by Western Intelligence organization and there Israel was a big mistake..... entering into delusion due their eagerness to achieve peace. The price paid by Israel for US support was in blood the US gained it's strategic victory over the "Evil Empire" with the essential help of Israel's Defense Forces and myself with a small token contribution and in the process risking my life in more than one occasion.
