re: Voicestream's decision

==========

Loser Voicestream - who has become a lead weight around DT's neck - has been directed to chart a cut rate road to 3G.

Rather like Nextel. Rather like Cingular, though motivated by an impending lack of DT cash versus spectrum.

Another sad North American soul clinging to EDGEfantasies.. which is very great news for cdma2000 in the US.

For Cingular - and now Voicestream - consolation prize EDGE becomes the insult atop injury. It's rather like being dumped at the last minute, then having to take your mom to the prom...

802.11 is dandy as a complement, but as a complement only. For Voicestream to construct a meaningful, widescale network of 802.11 sites would be quite expensive, and contradictory to it's core mandate from DT, which is working on the cheap.

So... Voicestream will do some airports and Starbucks, and get fitted for a fig leaf.

And DT will pinch pennies and pray for a sale to Cingular or AWE.

It's interesting that Voicestream is already talking down EDGEfantasy performance. With GPRS history as a guide, will Voicestream wait 2-3 years past expected delivery to discover that performance is a tenth of its expectations, provided it plows serious funds into cell splitting its network?

Then again, perhaps it's only the fantasy that matters.
