Well..The Kyoto Accord Is Already A Dead Quacker In The US.
So as long as any country does not sign on , no one can fine them, and they are free to pollute at their discretion.
A one world governing agency is not the solution , I agree with you...again.But there is the need for some global governance on issues that affect the global community..ie: humankind....earthlings......citizens of this planet...etc.. and their common requirements for survival. That is unless each country believes they should live long and prosper and to hell with the rest.If that is road you are going down, I am not with you Tim.
With regard to who has a right and who doesn't to " say anything against Israel ",their membership in the UN GUARANTEES their right to vote on resolutions in line with their member country's wishes. You or I may not like or agree with it , but that IS their right.
As to the progress thus far , I don't believe any one country can claim sole responsibility for the positive , or that matter negative, developments in the World so far.
" We " have come a long way , and the US has played an integral role in these developments, but there is so much more that can be done that requires the consensus and determination of the global community at large.
To think the entire world wishes to take the same path as the US to pursue their respective contributions to these ends is unrealistic. Therefore , each member of the UN is required to participate at whatever level deemed appropriate.Unfortunately, there is often disagreement on even that particular issue.
Their compliance hasn't always been admirable , and a number of members have withheld from their obligations in the past, in some ways undermining the importance, perceived or otherwise, of the UN itself. Whether or not these members have done this intentionally is open for debate. I tend to believe such actions are intended to telegraph their disdain to the rest of the World rather than actually attempt to undermine the legitimacy of the UN. At least I would hope that is the case.
Anyway , the biggest challenge facing the UN today is the ME .I believe the US has found it convenient (although not necessarily easier )to be part of the UN on this issue ,especially recently , and will find that a UN backed resolution will have more impact and staying power than anything it could propose or attempt to implement on its own.But ya just never know…….hope springs eternal.

PS: My post was more to emphasize the way the media feels it has the right to " say anything "..not what was actually said.OK? |
