this is a response i gave to a PM, the poster of the question of course remaining anonymous. the poster inquired my opinion on this matter <<My thought, perhaps naive, is if Arafat is martyred, won't the warring escalate?>>(and i responded thusly)--- The worst mistake Sharon could make(and i stress Sharon, because he is the one pulling all the levers now)---- the worst mistake Sharon could make is to martyr Arafat. Arafat, a man unworthy of glorification, would in martyrdom become glorified, and those far more extreme than him would actually assist in glorifying him to provide fuel their own agenda. The biggest problem in the mideast now, there be no great men or women in positions of power to forge a peace. if someone like Sadat and someone like Rabin were to emerge, a lasting peace could well follow, but i see know such people in the wings to move into positions of power.Mind you the people are there , on both sides, but they have been shouted out, and amongst them there appears to be none with the force of personality that is unfortunately needed to rise to power. Thanks for your PM . paxmax ---- and i now extend this response by defining what i mean by the more extreme when i wrote <<and those far more extreme than him would actually assist in glorifying him to provide fuel their own agenda.>> these are those factions that reject all consideration of Israel's right to exist. In short those that would freely distribute the evil fictions such as the "Protocols of the elders of Zion" to whip up another anti-semitic nightmare, for in the end, those who reject the Right for Israel to Exist ,they are not simply anti-Israel, they are anti-Jew, imo.
