I don’t know you or your way of thinking, so please forgive me if I run ahead of myself…
<<…The second is some serious argument that there is no difference between the local "terrorism" of opposition to colonial status and global terrorism that travels the globe looking for targets.>>
Do I understand correctly that the implication of your words is that Israel is a colonial power in the Middle East? Would that further imply that the state of Israel has no legitimate right to exist in the region?
Regarding the second part of your sentence, they don’t “travel the globe looking for targets”. They know very well the areas of the world where Jihad is in acute confrontation with the “infidel”, be it Israel, or Chechnya, or Kashmir, or Kosovo - or, more recently, New York, Washington - and Afghanistan.
Reading Jihad Web sites after September 11 I saw a number of stories about individual fighters, who may have fought in Afghanistan, then Chechnya, and then ended being “martyred” by Israelis. I read enough of such and similar stories to become convinced that the worldwide Jihad is rather well coordinated.
They closed many of those sites, but again, as an example, take a look at the page I saved.

<<…offer some sort of convincing evidence that links the current Palestinian attacks with Al-Qaida.>>
You know very well that any such evidence (beyond what I said above) would be circumstantial. Either one sees the connection, or one doesn’t, or one elects not to see.
