You are of course quite wrong about the coast of producing an ounce of gold. The cost is the sum of the direct costs of the mine including amortisation. Cost does not include head office overhead. The profit from the mines goes towards the overhead of the company and when it exceeds the overhead you have company profit. At least that is what I believe the convention to be. I think you have to look at it in marginal terms
