Brett Helsel uses his customized license tag to let the world know about his job — chief technology officer at F5 Networks.
Speed and performance are selling points for the Internet switches made by Seattle's F5 Networks, so Brett Helsel thought his "F5" personalized license plates were perfect for his yellow Porsche Carrera convertible.

Until he was called into his boss's office.

Helsel, the company's chief technology officer, ran late that morning and made up for lost time crossing Lake Washington on Highway 520. One of the commuters he blew past was an investor who called the founder and threatened to stop putting money into F5 if the yellow Porsche didn't slow down.

Helsel has eased up on the throttle, but he's not giving up the plates. Like many technology workers, Helsel believes custom plates are a way to let the world know what he does for a living. They also show his gratitude for a company whose 1999 stock offering enabled him to buy the Porsche.
"I was really proud of everything and when I bought it I thought F5," he said.

"Besides, when I drive by the Cisco guys, it's just going to drive them nuts," he said. "In our market we're killing them. I just give them a little reminder."
