The end of an era: Yesterday I got a hair cut at a local barber shop. a real men's barber shop. no shampoo, no blow dry, no pastel colors. just an elderly barber, brown barber chairs, a nice view outside the window (too cool for ladies in tank tops, darn)- sports magazines, hunting, newsweek, local papers. no glamour, better homes and garden, people mags, etc. Barber is retiring. sold the building. no new barbers coming thru. barber schools effectively history. I know that going to a beauty parlor is a religious rite for most women. while not on the same level, there is/was something comforting about going to the MENs barber shop, and the atmosphere of an era past. so the young boys and men of today will grow up thinking that you get your hair cut at beauty salons, by women "stylists" - alas. there were many good conversations there, sports, stocks (Corning Inc), women, weather, sports, women, cars, kids, grandkids, etc. thanks Joe and Bill, thanks for the many haircuts, good conversations, and a flavor of history. ( i did solve the immediate problem of where to get future haircuts by having my head shaved) |
