Terayon Selects Certicom's Broadband Security Solutions for Conditional Access and Content Protection

Certicom Solutions Help Manufacturers Address DOCSIS 1.1 Security
Requirements

HAYWARD, CA, April 2 /CNW/ - Certicom Corporation, (Nasdaq: CERT; TSE:
CIC), a leading provider of mobile e-business security, today announced that
Terayon Communication Systems, Inc. selected Certicom security solutions to
help them satisfy the rigid security requirements of the DOCSIS (Data Over
Cable Services Interface Specifications) 1.1 standard. Using Certicom's
leading security software, Terayon embedded encryption and public-key
infrastructure (PKI) technology into its TJ 615 and TJ 715 cable modems to
protect the content and ensure that only paid subscribers gain access.
Content protection security technology and services are being utilized to
secure data transmission in some of the industry's most innovative broadband
and cable service networks. Utilizing Certicom's broadband security solutions
to satisfy DOCSIS 1.1 requirements, Terayon products provide:

- Strong authentication of cable modems using digital certificates to
enable conditional access,
- Encryption of user data across cable networks to protect content,
- Protection against delivery of viruses and malicious code utilizing
digital signatures on code updates sent to cable modems.

Vendors look to DOCSIS 1.1 for added functionality like phone service,
video on demand, and faster Internet access to strengthen the lead that cable
has in the broadband content delivery market. Certicom products are optimized
to meet these demanding performance requirements and constraints of embedded
devices. Security Builder(R) and Trustpoint(TM) PKI toolkits provide all the
cryptographic software libraries, certification, and signature handling
required for DOCSIS-compliant implementations.
"Certicom's broadband security solutions - including our Security Builder
and Trustpoint toolkits, combined with our integration services - enable
Terayon to meet the latest industry levels of reliability, performance, and
compliance with DOCSIS security standards," said Simon Blake-Wilson,
Certicom's director of business development and cryptographer. "Certicom's
comprehensive range of security offerings and our expertise in porting
security solutions to embedded systems, is highly beneficial to broadband
cable manufacturers because it enables them to deploy highly efficient, secure
solutions across their product line."
"Terayon is focused on addressing consumers' desire for privacy and
security," said Benny Young, vice president of marketing for Terayon's Digital
Cable Solutions. "Certicom's security software enables us to effectively meet
our customers' needs with interoperable, state-of-the-art security based on
DOCSIS."
Certicom's industry-leading technology provides a more efficient
alternative to conventional public-key cryptographic algorithms in many
embedded and wireless environments, allowing for faster processing speed,
reduced bandwidth usage, and decreased battery requirements. These advantages
make Certicom's security technology particularly well suited to embedded
devices that incorporate less powerful processors, such as handheld computing
devices, Internet-enabled phones, and two-way pagers.
In addition to the solutions developed for Terayon, Certicom has also
developed solutions for conditional access and content protection for
Honeywell, XM Satellite Radio, Digital Island, Slam Dunk Networks, and
Globetrotter.
