China Telecom Selects Alcatel To Deploy Voice Over IP

DALLAS, TEXAS--APRIL 2, 2002 - 11:48 EST
Alcatel (NYSE: ALA), through Shanghai Bell, its
Chinese joint venture, and China Telecom Corporation, the largest
incumbent operator in China, have signed a contract for the
deployment of a complete VoIP NGN (Next Generation Network)
solution, connecting Shanghai and Beijing. Alcatel's solution will
provide new revenue-generating services and multimedia
applications, enabling China Telecom to migrate its traditional
infrastructure toward next generation technology.

Alcatel, leveraging its leadership in multiservice and broadband
access, will enable China Telecom to commercially trial multimedia
IP-based services, thereby ensuring full interoperability between
voice and packet-based terminals. Alcatel's solution includes
state-of-the-art 5000 and 5020 Softswitches, enabling advanced
voice services as well as IP-telephony and multimedia
applications, Alcatel Litespan 1540 multiservice access gateway
and Alcatel 7505 media gateway. Application servers, network and
service management equipment are also part of the contract.

"We chose Alcatel for their capability in voice switches and their
strength and vision in NGN solutions," said Wei Leping, chief
engineer of China Telecom. "The creation of Alcatel Shanghai Bell,
announced in October 2001, is good for China's telecom industry.
This company, bringing together the forces of Alcatel and Shanghai
Bell, will benefit from its unified strength on products,
technologies and marketing."

"As a world leader in both voice and data solutions, Alcatel is
ideally positioned to lead China Telecom's migration towards NGN,
guarantee service continuity and offer opportunities for
additional revenues," said Ludwig De Maeyer, Alcatel's president
of Voice Networks.

With more than 300 million lines delivered worldwide on digital
switching systems, Alcatel connects one out of five telephone
subscribers in the world. Alcatel is the dominant supplier of
tandem/toll switches for domestic and international long distance
call connection in China, which is a perfect stepping stone to the
new era of telecommunication network solutions.
