What Walter Hewlett's Whining Could Achieve

The investment world impatiently awaits preliminary results from the hotly debated proxy contest over the Hewlett-Packard (NYSE:HWP - news) and Compaq (NYSE:CPQ - news) merger. The vote ended two weeks ago, and early results are due in about two weeks.

In the interim, Walter Hewlett, who had been capably conducting his campaign to torpedo the proposed deal, has now badly overplayed his hand. His lawsuit, filed last week to invalidate Deutsche Bank's proxy in favor of the merger, appears to have cost him his board seat. And his claims of bribery could also cost him his good reputation.
