Your explanation is mostly right...

Sammy was a fraud case that he was investigating before his brain damage. Sammy was a fraud. Lennard mixed the two cases together in his own mind because he couldn't deal with the way his wife died. She was the diabetic and had tested Lennard. Lennard had found the attacker long ago with Teddy's help and had killed him. When Teddy realized that Lennard didn't remember killing the attacker he (Teddy) decided to use Lennard in his underhanded drug deals. When Lennard learned how Teddy had been using him to commit murders he (Lennard) decided to kill Teddy. Teddy was right in telling Lennard that he would not conscientiously be able to do anything to Teddy. Lennard decided to trick himself into believing that Teddy was the murderer of his wife, so that he would be able to kill him.

I don't agree that Lennards motive in killing Teddy was to protect the life project of chasing and killing his wife's murderer. If that were the case he also needed to protect the Teddy aspect. Lennard did believe Teddy's recollection and would have resolved his quest at that point except for the unfinished business with Teddy. Teddy could have helped him to resolve that issue years ago but instead used Lennard in a way that Lennard found intolerable. Killing Teddy would leave the "find wife's attacker and kill him goal" resolved....with a great car and 200,000 cash in the trunk.
