I know logic is not your strong suit, but it goes like this:

Competition is good for consumers. Lack of competition is bad for consumers. Abusive monopolies stifle competition, so are bad for consumers (and so have been made illegal by Congress).

Of course, one place an abusive monopoly's effect will first and most dramatically be seen is among those attempting to compete. That's why you see them as witnesses.
