Mary, seems to me that once it can be legally established that "var_sucks" is not you or Mike (either by said person filing a confidential affidavit to that effect, or simply Varian successfully unmasking him/her), you will have yet another strong argument for your appeal: that by the judge not verifying who was you and who was not, and by the jury not being allowed to single out which post(s) were considered libelous, how are we to know the incriminating posts were in fact written by you two at all? I know you have made a similar argument already, but this will be more specific as it will be proof positive that if Varian itself doesn't know who you are exactly, then how possibly could the judge or jury?
