Taiwan's UMC reshuffles executive management team again

HSINCHU, Taiwan -- Taiwan's United Microelectronics Corp. (UMC) here today once again reshuffled its executive management team, announcing that one of its vice chairmen has resumed his former role as chief executive.

John Hsuan, who was vice chairman of Hsinchu-based UMC, has been named CEO of the company. He assumes the CEO title from Robert Tsao, who will remain chairman of the silicon foundry giant.

Hsuan, who joined UMC in 1982, became the company's co-CEO in 2000. In 2001, he became one of three vice chairmen at UMC. The other vice chairmen are Peter Chang and Ing-dar Liu, both of whom will continue to hold these titles, according to the company.

Hsuan resumed his former role as CEO, because he "possesses extensive sales and marketing experience," according to the company.

He will also provide more leadership for the company, which has been hit hard by the current IC downturn, according to analysts. There is also a perception that UMC has taken its eye off the ball in recent times, allowing its main rival in Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. Ltd. (TSMC) to leapfrog the company in terms of offering leading-edge foundry technology in the marketplace, according to analysts.

It also represents the latest management change at UMC. Last week, it was learned that James Kupec, president of the company's U.S. subsidiary, suddenly resigned from the foundry provider (see March 28 story ).
