I agree with you that mediation is going to be required to achieve peace in the region. And the parties are going to have to be restrained.

But it has to be supported by the surrounding nations, if only out of fear that the region is on the brink of utter devastation (Israelis flinging nukes)..

But we still see Muslim leaders willing to denounce terrorism, but making special exceptions on the behalf of the Palestinians. Thus, stating that "it's bad to have terrorism in our own countries, but so long as it's directed against those vile Jews, it's alright"...

That's an attitude that has to change... and it will likely require even greater brinksmanship on the part of the Israelis, for them to earn the respect(through fear, if necessary) from their neighbors that they give Arafat.

The US certainly can't do it alone, lest we find ourselves being played by the Arabs who have every interest in keeping this struggle going, but only so long as it doesn't directly affect themselves.
