I'd say the term "imaginary friend" fits the bill for a statement about religious beliefs by secularists that's derogatory.

We already had the big debate on that. At Christmas time, as I recall. I have been duly chastised and educated. I don't use the term anymore except in reference to the Christmas learning experience during discussions about offending religious beliefs. I now say "personal God."

The problem I have with your original post is that the majority of "religious beliefs" you point to as offensive to you are mainline Christian and Jewish.

Well, of course they are. What other religions do I know enough about to include? What other religions are active in my public square? Islam the only other prominent religion in my part of the world and they do their thing in private. As you know, I am indifferent to what consenting adults do in private.

So it looks like you've covered most of the most meaningful parts of Christianity and Judaism

I understand that submission is an important part of Christianity, and Islam, too. I don't know enough about Judaism to speak to that. Yes, that is offensive to me. The point of this discussion is to negotiate how to reconcile this clash of beliefs in public fora. In order to do that, believers need to understand how seriously it offends. Then we can talk about how to make that offense more innocuous. I don't care what "consumptive sacrifices" people engage in amongst themselves. I think most realize that they don't belong at a high school graduation. Likewise snakes, speaking in tongues, and dolls with pins in them. So all that's left to negotiate are the religious messages emphasizing what wretches we humans are. Surely there is more to Christianity than submission.
