No one, and I mean no one, has dealt with the capacity, cost, interference, and frequency re-use problems EDGE has which were mentioned by Dr. J. in November '01. I believe Dr. J. when he says that a lot more base stations and towers may have to be built in order to get decent speeds. Illmarinen got madder than a wet hen when I mentioned this in another board. He chittered away incomprehensibly but his post was essentially meaningless unless you feel like deciphering hieroglyphics.

The subtext surrounding VoiceStream's recent announcement concerning its new emphasis on 802b.11 in my estimation says it all: GPRS is limited and EDGE will be too expensive to roll out on a mass basis.

Perhaps the GSM bunch will launch EDGE as another "premium" service like HSCSD. I'm not even mentioning GPRS and its limitations.

The GSM bunch's technologies race in lead shoes while 1x laps them again and again. The carriers will soon enough see that the emperor has no clothes.
