I did not portray myself as having run a study of the matter. It is purely informal, and a matter of my impressions, which may, of course, be incorrect. If you have studies contradicting my impressions, I would be interested to see them.
On the matter of pretentiousness, again, if there are "objective studies" of the question, I would be interested to see them. My impression may very well be skewed by the type who make it a point to sneer at religion, thus revealing his bent, as I mentioned. My impression of pretentiousness, though, derives from those people who dogmatically asserted that everyone knew such and such was nonsense, or incredible, or whatever, without being able to adduce grounds. This suggested to me that they hadn't given the matter much thought, but were bent on conforming themselves to what they perceived of as sophisticated opinion. In the college setting, the religious were comparatively thoughtful, and able to discuss their beliefs with more insight......... |
