We had a guy named "Jeb" who came to our school and heckled girls with short hair, or who were wearing pants, and told them they were going to hell. He wasn't actually enrolled at our school, but he wasn't very thoughtful.

I think people are thoughtful when they are not challenged. Most people who feel their beliefs are being challenged (even when what is actually happening is just an active discussion) lose their thoughtfulness rather quickly. Just my observation. It has also been my observation that the religious are more likely to assume everyone understand the existence of God, and then shake their heads sadly over people who do not. I have found in many (but certainly not all) religious persons, a tendency to think it is the "fault" of the non-believer for being the way they are. You surely can't have missed that ethos. "You aren't opening your heart" blah blah blah. I find that sort of morally superior attitude to be pretentious.
