I would have thought it was more of a religious war than an ideological one.

To the Islamists, that's a distinction without a difference; their religion and ideology is intertwined. It is the other Muslims who must figure out how to keep their religion from being totally hijacked. That's not easy in a religion without an official church hierarchy, whose main spokesmen have good reason to be afraid of the Islamists.
