There are people who are more suited for professional money management modalities. Gold funds offer that service to people. I do not believe I am in the average category to which you address your generalization. There is even an accomodating Rydex Gold Fund which offers index switching ops to those who are so inclined. A rather famous silver-hair, Ken Gammage of the Richland Report gives daily Rydex switching calls based on his proprietary charting algorithims, and is pretty good at it as I understand. He's SO good at it that he has a 900# service for the faithful who track him in this regard, as well as Rydex Ursa and whatever the "other" one is<grin>...sorry my bull and bear Rydex indices names' escape me.
