I think the level of entanglement matters. If students at a public school draw pictures that get posted on a wall and one of them has a relgious theme I don't think that is a constitutional problem. If however the principle calls everyone down for an assembly where they have a religious service that probably is establishment of a religion, and even if I could be convinced that it wasn't establishment of religion (and thus not a constitutional problem) I still would think it would go to far in a secular society.

Edit - If you are two loose as to the level of entanglement allowed then you can get obvious religious establishment or even theocracy. If you are two extreme in trying to avoid any entaglement or appearence of entaglement you discriminate against religious ideas and reduce the free exercise of religion.

What are religions if they are not "ideas"?

A religion is an organization based on religious ideas. Any special role for such an organization gives at least the appearance of establishment of religion.
