Ted - Thanks for your thoughtful comments! MY ex-boss was a upper-midlevel manager of a hugh former Bell System computer installation, with gigantic legacy systems.

Yes, there are problem, but IMHO they seem hyped up by the consultants and IS managers looking for hugh budget increases. I fully understand that the clock is ticking, but as usual the consultants for the large companies will fix the systems for the big companies and learn how to fix them as they go. Then they will lower the price for smaller companies, because they will become more efficient as they learn. Programmers are very smart people and a few of the will make fortunes by designing programs to fix the bugs.
