Dear Monica:

Why do those in the know pull their Intel servers and replaced them with Athlon servers? Because they were faster, cheaper and more reliable. And those 4 way Xeon 1.6GHz servers are slower than dual AMP 2000+ servers at far higher cost. And for the cost of that 4 way Xeon 1.6GHz server, 3 dual AMP 2000+ servers can be purchased with far higher performance overall. The NB or SB on the Xeon goes bad and its down for the count. One goes on the AMP server, and there are two other servers that take up the load and the cluster stays running. Matter of fact, upgrading the hardware or software does not require the cluster to shut down. Even repair leaves the cluster running 24/7.

Faster, better and cheaper wins over slower, worse and expensive most of the time. And that scales far beyond 4 way (288 way ones are running now). You can pick up a 64 way for less than $70K.

Pete
