There are many reasons for this,
Large expanses of the world's forests are in rapid decline and could be lost much sooner than expected,
but one that isn't often discussed is the effect of environmentalism on American Forestry. The national forests are nearly out of the timber business thanks to environmentalist political pressure and litigation, but people haven't slowed down building houses so they have to get their wood somewhere. That somewhere is Siberia, SE Asia, and Latin America, where forestry is but a dream.

Too bad. The law of unintended consequences is operating perfectly. We call it the NIMBY syndrome. Not In My Back Yard. Cut somebody else's forest. It doesn't matter if forestry is practiced there or not.
