Most of the kayaking I will probably be doing is the local kind. When the market closes I enjoy popping onto my bicycle and heading out of town to the local creek. Ideally my perfect kayak would be one that I could carry in a backback or tow behind my bicycle. Next best would be something that would fit inside my minivan without having to remove the baby seat in the back. I will buy a roof rack only if I really need one to transport the kayak of my choice. I am not very fond of cars in general, and see it as a bit of a waste and a very yuppy thing to travel 2 hours by car to the perfect river to paddle for a few hours and drive 2 more hours back home. I am not very interested in fishing. I enjoy being in nature and I like transport that is silent and efficient. Portability, convenience, comfort, flexibility (to go in all kinds of water) and performance are also important to me. White water thrills do not interest me per se. I only want to be able to get through them safely if I have to in order to get somewhere worthwhile. I live about a one hour drive from the Pacific Ocean and I would love to be able to explore the coastline. I am just not sure that I want to get a fifteen foot sea kayak that weighs 65 pounds and is going to be cumbersome to carry any distance if such trips are likely to be as rare as I imagine. I have one infant with another on the way and I am usually lucky if I can get away for a couple of hours in the afternoon.

I learned to sail on small boats on a river and enjoyed racing a great deal. The best part was that I could bicycle to the river and I had a fleet of small sailboats from which to choose - lasers, larks, mercuries, etc. Unfortunately I now live 3,000 miles away from that lovely river and its fabulous boat club. The consolation prize is that I now live in northern California where the weather is lovely most of the year. I doubt that I will be doing much foul weather boating.
