Byrdman, Got any solutions for limiting the Grackels & Black birds at the feeders? I don't mind feeding them, but they are hogs & intimidate the finches, cardinals & other smaller birds. You can try a feeder with a smaller opening with smaller seed. Or put it closer to the house. Some of them are a little skittish to come too close. My biggest problem were the squirrels. They are the greediest little bastards... I got a little plastic hemisphere that sits over the top and extended the feeder a couple of feet off my deck railing. Using a squirrel protected feeder in steel armor <g> also help them from chewing big holes in the plastic/plexiglass feeder. I also put out a few feeders with different seed. It allows the little guys to go where the bullies aren't. I notice many of them prefer to flock to their own kind. So the bullies dominate one rather than all of them. They sort of chase each other from one to the next. What seed do you use? I mostly use sunflower seed. Seems to be their favorite. But I also use the cheaper mixed seed. Others seem to prefer that. I've yet to find many of them who like that tiny thistle feed. That feeder with the tiny little holes is only used by them when I haven't had the time to refill the feeders. We get Gold finches, Chicadees, Nut Hatches, Tit Mouse (birds), woodpeckers, house finches, and a few other species but I forget their names. Blue Jays are bullies but still sort of fun to watch. I like when the chicadees get up enough nerve and chase them away. Like little fighter jets they do fly-bys... We have a pair of Cardinals that have been with us for a while now. It's cool seeing them stick together and watch each other's back while the other one eats. They never go to the feeder though. They seem to prefer to stay low and eat what ever falls to the ground. Same with the mourning doves. I enjoy watching those birds. ...so does my cat (from the window sill). <ng> <g> -TheYardBirdMan
