Duke: It seems that this came as a surprise to Sherlund which gives one pause regarding Sherlund being wired into the inner sanctum of MSFT as suggested by Just Observing.

It seems that he did what he was asked to do and is leaving amicably. He was correct to assume that Balmer and Gates were not reallt ready to give up the reins at their present ages.

I think he makes a valid assumption.

I wish I could remember the name of that last CFO who was so highly regarded - Maffei comes to mind. He left and went to a start up and they went into receivership. It is a cold world outside the womb of MSFT.
