Rick is known as a capable executive and I have been told that Ballmer came to admire him a great deal when he was at HP. They worked together for more than 10 years and developed a close personal relationship.

I think that when Belluzzo did not get the top job at HP, he went to SGI as a "parking spot", waiting for the right spot. When Ballmer picked up the day to day operations at Microsoft, he really needed a top general manager to help run the ship, and Rick filled the bill.

Probably, Rick is just tired of the rat race and wanted something a little more fun, that used a little less of his time. After a year as president, I would assume that he has made the kind of operational changes that Ballmer was looking for. Microsoft has a history of creating a "presiddent" slot which lasts only a year or so, usually to get through some management or organizational transition.
