Kasten Chase Acquires Leading Security Solution For Palm OS(R) Handhelds
Toronto, Ontario
New Addition to the Assurency(TM) Portfolio of Secure Mobile Computing Solutions
Kasten Chase (TSE:KCA - news), a leading provider of high-assurance data security solutions, today announced the acquisition of the assets, intellectual property and customer base for DataGator(TM), a software application that protects data stored on personal digital assistants (PDAs) and other handheld devices that use the Palm OS operating system.
With over 4,000 users, DataGator had been a successful initiative for JAWZ Canada Inc., who launched the solution late in 2000. DataGator is targeted directly at the large and rapidly growing global market for palmtop and handheld computing and communications devices. As a Palm OS device, it supports a wide range of products including those from Handspring, Sony, HP, and Compaq.
Kasten Chase will introduce new features, improve the performance, and market the DataGator application under its Assurency SecureData brand, part of the company's new Assurency portfolio of secure mobile computing solutions.
Kasten Chase first previewed Assurency SecureData on February 5th, 2002 at the PalmSource(TM) Conference and Exposition in San Jose, California. Assurency SecureData provides strong, transparent encryption of all data in all applications on Palm OS handhelds and controls user access to these applications with strong user authentication.
``Increasingly, corporations are providing their mobile workforces with PDAs and other handheld computers that store proprietary or sensitive corporate information,'' stated Paul Hyde, CEO at Kasten Chase. ``Kasten Chase's Assurency portfolio was introduced to safeguard valuable corporate data stored on, or transmitted between, mobile computers such as PDAs. We see tremendous opportunity to leverage the DataGator solution within this portfolio.``
Under the terms of the purchase agreement with the receiver for JAWZ Canada, Kasten Chase paid C$ 150,000 in cash for full rights of ownership in the DataGator technology and related assets. Concurrently, Kasten Chase has secured employment contracts with the professional staff responsible for developing and marketing the DataGator product.
Kasten Chase plans to migrate its Assurency solutions to a variety of popular mobile computing appliances, including laptops, palmtop computers, wireless e-mail pagers, and smart phones. ``The experienced technical and sales personnel joining Kasten Chase will enhance our expertise in security solutions for mobile computing platforms, shorten our product development cycles, and open up new commercial markets for our Assurency portfolio,'' Paul Hyde added.
``With an expected payback period estimated at less than one year, this acquisition will provide a significant return on investment for Kasten Chase,'' continued Mr. Hyde. ``Since Assurency SecureData is 100% software, we expect strong margins as we move this product through our existing sales force as well as the channel infrastructure that was established for DataGator.''
Assurency SecureData is the second product to be included in Kasten Chase's new Assurency suite. Assurency SecureMail, first announced on January 28th, 2002 is a wireless e-mail security solution for Research in Motion's (RIM; TSE:RIM, NASDAQ:RIMM) BlackBerry(TM) wireless e-mail pager.
Assurency SecureData for Palm OS®, Professional Version is priced at US$ 45 for a single-user license. Customer shipments will commence May 15th, 2002. Assurency SecureMail for BlackBerry(TM) is US$ 65 for a single-user license and will first ship to customers on May 30th, 2002.
