The only hope is that Arafat's bloody rule over his own people has resulted in thin support for his policies. Once he is replaced, it is possible that more moderate leaders may emerge. This is unlikely given the history of the conflict and the indoctrination of Palestinian youth.

And, I'm afraid, the last week. If this is your hope, then you should be extremely critical of the way in which Sharon has elected to proceed. Because, whatever else it may have produced, it has inflamed the Palestinian population against the present Israeli government, increased the popularity of Hamas et al, and increased Arafat's popularity enormously.
