When Scruffy was on the upswing and almost at 90 degrees to Big John's body (hence imparting a large upward velocity to him, with a small horizontal component to carry Scruffy away from the hole), he released him.

As Scruffy flew through the air with the greatest of ease, he muttered beatifically "Wow! What a trip!" Unfortunately for Big John, the reaction (Newton's Third Law) to the momentum he imparted to Scruffy caused the Big Hole to collapse. On him.
