Ever heard about Menachem Begin? He was Israel's Prime Minister with true intention of creating peace with the Palestinian, but he was a terrorist during his younger days? The truth is both sides have their hands full of blood of innocent people.
Yes, I heard plenty about Menachem Begin's terrorist activities ---since the only Middle Eastern studies class I took in college, back in 1974, was taught by an Arab. You are correct to state that both sides have their hands full of blood of innocent people.
In the end, however, the Israeli people have done far more to earn my respect and empathy. The Israelis built a vibrant, democratic society and economy from nothing while surrounded by unfriendly forces. I can't think of many outstanding, Arab democracies in the region. The last, great Arab statesman was Egypt's Anwar Sadat, who was dutifully assassinated by his own people as a reward for his vision and courage.
Arafat hasn't shown any ability to get the streets paved, pick up the garbage and perform other activities we associate with real government. I don't think he is capable of making the same transition to leadership of a country that Menachem Begin did, a leader that was democratically elected by an educated populace.
On the other hand, if Isreali people were occupying my back yard, I might feel different. Certainly the problem is very complicated with no easy solution.
