It would be interesting to know what was happening in France during the Amistead trial. I know (dimly) that France was less racist than most European countries, although France, like most European countries, allowed slavery, indeed, prospered from slavery.

One of my favorite stories, which hasn't been told for a while, is how slavery led to the French revolution. The French colonized the West Indies, and made a lot of money in sugar and indigo, impossible without slaves or tractors. This money led to a large bourgeoisie in France, who agitated against the privileges of nobility.
