That reminds me...another comic of the same genre as Newhart was George Gobel....I remember watching a Tonight Show episode in which he appeared and I think he produced one of the funniest spontaneous moments EVER on network TV... I found this description online... "Did you ever feel like the whole world was a tuxedo and you were a pair of brown shoes?" I just had to laugh when I heard this famous quote from the comedian, George Gobel. He said this when he appeared one night on "The Tonight Show" with Johnny Carson. He was the third guest on the program, a spot usually reserved for the most famous guest on the show each night. You could see the nervousness of Mr. Gobel as he shook Johnny’s hand and took a seat and politely greeted the prior guests sitting next to him. He was truly perplexed as to how he found his way to being the final act in this show. How could a working-class comedian follow legends like Bob Hope and Dean Martin(remember, this was the late 60’s – they were quite big at that time)? After a slow drag on his cigarette, he looked down at his shoes as if he was searching for something – maybe it was inspiration. The sweat was obvious on his shiny forehead. He then looked out into the audience and muttered his famous quote to the mirth of the host and sending his fellow guest to the floor writhing in laughter. With that one humorous quote, George Gobel forever sealed his status on the "Tonight Show" as the clean up act whenever he was to appear. Jeff Palmer, author
