I think the "industry wide slowdown in demand" was first mentioned by Seagate after announcing lower than expected earnings.

In todays IBD, Seagate again mentions increased competition from the other major players, and Weaker demand for Its high end drives.

The article mentions that even though Seagate might be getting a smaller poece of the pie, the pie is expanding. Sales of all disk drives should hit 34 billion this year, and according to Disk Trend, that number will grow to 75 billion by 2000.
