Re: KPN & i-mode & UMTS delay

From Mike at Mobile Communications ...

KPN Mobile performed a quick two-step shuffle this week, taking one step forward with the announcement that it would launch i-mode in the Netherlands on April 18th and then retreating one step by putting back the launch of UMTS services to 2004. Executives said that they were in no hurry to launch 3G until the mobile data market had been sufficiently galvanised by i-mode. That sort of talk is hardly music to the ears of infrastructure manufacturers, who are contemplating their worst year ever according to some reports. Motorola said this week that it does not expect to post a net profit for 2002, although it is still grimly clinging on to the hope of a turnaround in the second half. Siemens echoed the gloomy tone predicting "a difficult year for the mobile infrastructure unit" due to operators "re-examining" their network investments.
