Ted, this is usually the kind of response that is given in response to accusations against Islam. It's an easy and convenient way to duck the current issue. It is also used by the Muslim extremists to whip up more hatred against Christians.

The real issue is what the scriptures actually preach, not how evil-doers twist them to their own benefits. I know enough scripture and theology to know that the Bible didn't preach the Inquisition and the Crusades. However, I don't know enough of the Koran to know whether Islam preaches violence against Jews and Christians or not. And those who say the Koran doesn't preach this aren't being heard, perhaps because the voices of the extremists are drowning them out.

P.S. - As usual, I have very little interest in liberal post-modern interpretations of holy texts. I want to see strong arguments, not Clintonese like "It all depends on what your definition of 'jihad' is."
