Should that not apply in reverse too? If they claim that I should be respectful of their religious beliefs, then it is equally valid for me to claim that they should be respectful of my non-religious beliefs. And we both know that quite commonly religious heirarchies in particular are not.

And there is also the question of just what an "attack" is. Darwin's "The Origin of Species" was widely viewed soon after its publication as an attack on religion.
