Jacob-- Somehow you missed my point. I was not defending soot, I was arguing that we could reduce it by using nuclear power. Of course you are right, but we need power and we should be seeking nonpolluting sources. I have solar hot water and use natural gas to be environmentally friendly.

However, we differ whether the particulate matter doesn't hit the stratosphere and whether carbon dioxide is a threat. I'm checking the facts now, but one organic chemist I know claimed that CO2 is why we have more trees now than when Columbus landed. Plants obviously need CO2 for photosynthesis and emit oxygen. CO2 may not be an environmental issue.

My point is that there are genuine differences in these important questions and you dissing the motives of those who disagree with your position does not speak well of you. I thought that your calling my bringing facts to your attention that differred from your beliefs did not warrant you calling my post a "rant", just as you maligned others who disagree. I don't doubt your motives, but I do think unidimensional facts doesn't advance knowledge.

Again, I am influenced by data. I used to believe that electric magnetic radiation led to cancer until the data refuted this. Saccarine is not a carcinogin. I have looked for research implicating hydrocarbon emissions as a carcinogin and not found any. Clearly it is related to pulminary disorders, but if you have time, point me in the direction of data on this. I have reviewed every study on DDT and cancer about 10 yrs ago, and the data indicated that DDT may INHIBIT cancer. I presented the data at the University that began the Environmental Defense Fund that banned DDT and the biologists couldn't show data indicating cancer. I will bore you to tears if you want more information. I cannot understand your position that because you protested nuclear power in your youth, this adds credibility to your position. Why has Antarctica cooled if we're having global warming? Notice also, we no longer read about Ozone depletion. The holes have closed and so have the fears. The earth is not falling.

All you have to do is acknowledge that you incorrectly maligned people's motives because of your intense concern for the environment and then we both can be open to a civil discussion, and I'll cool down. I don't warrant being called a lacky or accused of ranting.
