I thought I'd address this to the thread, since it concerns a notion that appears to be getting a generally positive reception, one for which I happen to have little affection.

It has been postulated that attacking or ridiculing "cherished values" is a nasty thing, and that people here shouldn't do that. This notion has been particularly applied to religious discussion, and it has been particularly suggested that unbelievers ought to tread terribly lightly when pointing out what they perceive to be contradictions or logical failures in various belief systems, lest they cause offense to those who hold these things dear.

This is bullshit.

OK, in ordinary conversation, I'd agree. I'd be the last person to jump on a bunch of believers and start haranguing them about "imaginary friends". I'm not about to walk into a church and start debating the existence of God. I would never raise the subject in ordinary conversation, and I'd generally avoid it if it was raised.

This is different. This is a boxing ring. If you bring an idea here it is subject to abuse, and those who can't bear to see their ideas abused shouldn't bring them here. Complaining about an "attack on cherished values" in this context makes about as much sense as jumping into a real-life boxing ring and complaining that the other guy punched you in the nose. There is no standing for complaint. That's what happens here. That's what this place is for.

People who believe quietly and keep their beliefs to themselves should certainly be left alone. Get up on the rostrum, though, and it's open season. Those who can't take the heat in the kitchen should stay out in the parlor and wave their lacy little fans.

Now can we flush this PC crap down the toilet of irrelevance and get back to attacking each other's ideas, cherished or not?
