re: However, its clearer to me that Israel's show of force, while effective at keeping the Arabs at bay for now, can not be the long term solution.
I doubt that Israel views it as a long term solution but meanwhile terrorism reached unexceptable levels. You have friends in israel so you know that israelis are not blood thirsty evil creatures and if they would see any other way.......
Albert, yes I know the Israelis are not blood thirsty but they are scared. And scared people do extreme things. That's what has me worried. Sharon is too paranoid to be a leader.....plus he is still grieving.......his wife died just about a year ago. That's not a good combination.......I question his ability to make good decisions right now.
re: With that in mind, Israel's best hope is to find another approach to solving the problems with its neighbors and the Palestinians.
it seems everything possible was tried, including an offer for economic support and development from both US and Israel. It did not work. The unfortunate fact is that Palestinian representatives are the very same terrorists that want to destroy Israel and hence negotiations are useless. It is one thing to say what would be better for both Isrtaelis and Palestinians but the other is convincing terrorists to give up their control - it is not going to happened without US and Israel showing their force.
The use of force is not working. It has not worked in the past either......all it did was buy a little peace for a while. I have said this before on this thread and Andreas has made similar comments. When you have a good job, a nice house, a car and a family, you are less likely to blow yourself up in a Tel Aviv club.
re: I know that when the economic disparity between the Arabs and the Israelis is lessened, the violence will lessen as well.
yeh, right, when arabs attacked Israel 1st time around it was a poor country. What was the excuse then?
They were both poor....it didn't matter. The attacks were motivated by ethnic hatred. Times have changed and the conditions have changed......the Israelis are very rich in comparison to the Arabs. Its worse now for the Arabs........their enemy has become rich right before their eyes while they wallow in poverty and unemployment.
re: Andreas? he thinks that there is an excuse for terrorists, and that by itself is inexcusable and ther will be no peace while there opinions like that
On the contrary, the world needs more people who think like Andreas. Its only when there are more people like Andreas in the Middle East on both sides will there be a chance for a real and lasting peace.
