I believe the story about $43 Million going to the Taliban, originates from an article from Salon.Com dated 9-13-01. The U.S. did not give that money to the Taliban, it gave it to International Aid Agencies and NGOs. Salon.Com wrote a retraction on 10-3-01. Before 9/11, I belive the United States was prohibited in giving direct aid to Afghanistan or the Taliban by International Agreement (the Geneva Accords, whereby the Soviets agreed to leave Afghanistan, and the U.S. agreed to not interfere in the internal affairs of Afghanistan).
