As usual, just my humble perspective.
And mine, as well, although I think that PC originally was well meaning. It is simple courtesy to call women "women" rather than "ladies" or "girls" if that's what they prefer. But it spun out of control from there.
The reason I brought up the "forbearance" point was that it's a word of which Neo seems to be quite fond. Before Neo, I'm not sure I had ever used the word, opting instead for the more straight-forward "restraint." I sometimes use Neo's more, er, precise word choices to tease him. He tended to use the word in the context of admonitions about civility and he showed a preference for it during our discussions on finding the brite line in religious discussions. When I looked the word up, I was surprised to find that it had a somewhat patronizing spin, as opposed to plain old "restraint." So, in the context of trying to identify a possible standard for "contempt," we were using a word that, shall we say, had a bit of an attitude, itself. And that tickled me. Of course, no one could possibly know any of that. I just chuckled at my own post. |
