rather a term of respect beside 'gentleman' which has also gone out of style for unclear reasons

It has, hasn't it. Except for one use, which I find fascinating. Have you ever noticed, when law enforcement officials refer to a perp, how often they say something like "and the gentleman was found standing over the body..."? It's like they want to avoid any hint of disrespect so they've totally flip-flopped the meaning. Perhaps they don't do that in your part of the world. I hear it a lot here and it makes me cringe.

I think the "woman" thing was important in the early days of women's rights. IMO, anyone who gets exercised over such things at this point in time needs to get a life. Still, "man" goes with "woman" and "ladies" goes with "gentlemen" and the PC thing to do as well as correct English usage is to maintain that relationship. I can't see making a crusade out of it. (Is it still OK to use the word, crusade?)

too many posts to catch up

It's particularly amazing when you consider that we're pretty much run out of things to talk about.

I hope you haven't been bored to the point of permanent departure. It's nice having you around.
