techlvr,

re: 1xRTT "speed", "hype", and "Branding"

FWIW:

<< Later hyping the upgrade to 1X with speeds up to 384kbs, >>

When 1xRTT upgrades to Revision A introducing a new spreading factor are made, peak rates will be 307 kbps not 384kbs ...

IMHO:

... "hyping" anything (relative to peak rates) is counterproductive, and there has been entirely too much of that even prior to introduction of next-gen services (by all players, all technologies) setting unrealistic expectations.

Having said that, Verizon's language (... with bursts to 144 kbps) is perfectly acceptable ... and there is nothing wrong with touting "equivalent throughput" that accrues from data compression/data optimization software.

I am all for Qualcomm, CDG, and the CDMA carriers splitting with some serious coin to develop some brand recognition for "CDMA", "cdma2000", 1xRTT (not a good name for consumer recognition, IMO), and "Qualcomm".
