NEW YORK (Dow Jones)--Israeli intelligence officials say they have evidence that Palestinians have recently augmented their primitive weapons with significantly more powerful, military-grade explosives that appear to be smuggled into the Palestinian-controlled territories, according to a report in Sunday's New York Times.

The officials were quoted as saying a forensic examination found traces of RDX in two massive explosive charges used in cripple Israeli tanks in the Gaza Strip in February and March. They add that RDX is an explosive more potent than the rudimentary bombs previously detonated by the Palestinians.

The Times also reported that the officials said two suicide bombings last month also appeared to have more powerful explosives - and appeared to be more expertly built.

In addition, the intelligence officials said they suspect that some small arms and explosives have been smuggled into Palestinian areas through a network of tunnels in Rafah, the divided city in the southern Gaza Strip, the Times reported.

The report also cited "an American official in the region" as saying "The Palestinians have learned some new tricks."
