Cost lives? That is such a oil lobby-Detroit lobby crock. You think everyone needs big heavy SUV's to keep safe? Have you seen the new stats on how Detroit fares against smaller Japanese and Euro models in 10 MHP crash tests? The Japanese and Euro cars fared much better in terms of safety and damage even though they are smaller. The Detroit cars crumpled on impact costing thousands of dollars, including their SUV's and mini-vans. It's not the size of the car, silly, it's the engineering. Volvo makes the safest cars and they are not the biggest, nor the gas guzzlers many Detroit models are. I find it absurd to see all these little soccer moms driving around in their huge SUV's getting 10 MPG. It's needless, especially multiplied by a million in terms of the amount of gasoline wasted.
We had cheap gas through the 90's but don't count on that to continue. We must be prepared. Gas prices just went up 40% in two months case you didn't notice. And that's WITHOUT war in the Persian Gulf, just tension.

If you use a gas guzzler at least fill it up and really use it. If not, get a high-mileage car. And in the future always be aware of these factors. Only use what you need and no more. And forget about Detroit "safety" propaganda, they've been building unsafe cars for decades because they're cheaper to make and break down faster so you need to replace them. Planned obsolescence. hey, how about those big safe Ford Explorers, huh? I'd rather have a Honda Civic. A lot safer.
