Re: What are the chances of an AMD/APPL partnership around OS/X?

The obvious partner for AMD is really SUN. SUN already has an X86 port of its OS and many of its tools. SUN already has 64-bit compilers and tools that could be ported to Hammer, and SUN has just as compelling a need for higher performing chips as does Apple.

The beauty, from SUN's perspective, of Intel having developed such an effective system of extortion, is that SUN can be pretty confident that its Hammer systems wouldn't face any competition from Dell, Compaq/HP, or Gateway Hammer systems - since Intel won't let those companies ship any AMD based servers.

In fact, AMD probably would have nothing to lose by contracting with SUN to sell Hammers only to SUN or through distribution - and exclude Dell, Compaq/HP, and Gateway from direct purchases for some period.

SUN would be able to offer Solaris systems with unprecedented performance that also offered outstanding performance on X86 binaries - the best of both worlds. Imagine Solaris workstations that included Lindows to run the X86 universe of installed code and tools.
